Lockington’s local ukulele group ‘The Locky Ukers’ joined the festivities during the town’s recent Vintage Rally.

The ukulele group of 13 players performed a ‘Vintage Vibes’ concert, for an appreciative crowd in the Lockington Heritage Centre on the evening of Saturday, April 27.

The audience of locals, rally exhibitors and visitors joined in with songs and thoroughly enjoyed the musical evening. The Lockington Heritage Committee provided supper afterwards.

The ukulele group currently has 15 members from the Lockington district and surrounds, and some members travel regularly from Echuca, and even Gunbower, to enjoy the weekly practice night in Lockington’s ‘Plumber’s Shed’ community space.

The group is supported by the Lockington Neighbourhood House.

The ukulele group began as a single beginner’s ukulele class 12 months ago. A second class swelled numbers, with the addition of some experienced players.

Another beginner’s class will be held this year.

The Locky Ukers have an extensive portfolio of well-known cover songs, but they also sing originals penned by the group’s initiator and leader Su Taylor.

The group’s maiden performance featured 5 players at the Miloo CWA district meeting, recruiting a new member and sparking wide interest around the district.

Since then, the Locky Ukers have provided entertainment for the Lockington Seniors Christmas lunch and hosted a learning workshop for 28 ukulele players from around the region.

The Locky Ukers have a keen and supportive following in the local area and expect to expand the ukulele group as more people show interest in playing.

The group is a supportive environment for people who would like to have a go at learning to play this very accessible instrument.

The Locky Ukers aim to share a love of music and song with the community, while having a lot of fun.
