There was significant damage to the exterior fencing, heritage doorway and surrounding brickwork
The Loco Shed Inc group, which takes care of the building, was made aware of the damage late Sunday afternoon.
President Dick Phillips said the damage would take months to repair, as it was a heritage-listed building.
“It’s on the Victorian Historic Buildings Register ... you can’t just bung a door in there, it has to be to specifications,” he said.
“The door is not like a honeycomb door that you can go and buy from Bunnings, it means something’s got to be custom-made to replace it ... obviously you can’t leave it like that, so it’s got to come out of our pocket.
“It all takes time and it’s a cost to get permits and we’ve got to make it secure but we’re also not allowed to fix anything to the building, it takes months.”
For the past 30 years, the Loco Shed Inc group has been working to turn the space into a museum and a community space.
The group is driven by volunteers and funded through fundraising, donations and grants.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said an investigation was under way.
“Police are investigating a burglary in Echuca,” they said.
“Officers have been told unknown offenders forced entry but it appears nothing has been stolen.”
