SOUTHERN Cross Care residents will now be able to enjoy the sweet taste of home-grown fruit and veggies thanks to new garden beds installed by Moama Lions Club.

The five beds are home to flourishing rows of radishes, carrots, snowpeas, silverbeet and flowers, bringing a whole lot of fun and making residents’ day a bit brighter.
The project was set in motion when Moama Lions approached Southern Cross asking how they could help.
“They said they'd love a vegetable garden,” president Bob Hardwick said.
“So we went back, talked about it and decided we'd go for a grant from council, which we were eventually given.”
Using the $2500 raised, the club assembled the eye-catching garden along with help from Murray River Council and generous discounts from Bunnings.
“I'm sure residents will have heaps of fun times out here,” Mr Hardwick said.
“It's going to improve their quality of life. The veggies they grow are going to be cooked and they'll be able to eat them and talk about them at their own table.
“I think it's one of the best things Lions Moama has ever done. And we'll continue to do more.”
Southern Cross Care’s Korrie Watts said it was hard to keep delighted residents away from the new garden beds.
“Last night nobody wanted to leave the garden area, they were outside gardening until well after tea time,” she said.
“When we eat what we grow, it's always sweeter. It’s just amazing, especially for the residents here who have a passion for gardening.”
Mr Hardwick said this would hopefully be the first of many projects Moama Lions would undertake in the town.
“We are now going to concentrate on keeping things within the area and trying to help the aged because let's face it, they've done a lot of stuff for us,” he said.
