After years of calling for the service, Ms Ley made the announcement in May 2024, with the expansion coming into effect soon after in July.
An Australia Post spokesperson said the expansion has been well received by Moama residents.
“We’ve had great feedback from locals following our expansion of street delivery to around 600 extra households across 35 streets,” the spokesperson said.
“We are pleased to have implemented the new delivery area in July last year ... which has also seen the delivery contractor increase the size of their team.”
Moama’s growing population was a major factor in the decision, with parcel volumes increasing and not enough PO boxes available at the Moama Licensed Post Office.
Before the expansion, residents in the newer areas of Moama relied on PO boxes, meaning some important documents, such as confidential letters, couldn’t be mailed directly.
The expansion has also meant the luxury of residents receiving parcels at their doorstep, eliminating the need to make a trip to the post office.
Ms Ley, who worked with Australia Post and the Moama Post Office to help make the expansion a reality, said it was a pleasure to advocate for the service.
“I was very pleased to see the initial expansion of delivery services into more areas in Moama, after considerable effort from the community and my team campaigning for this service,” she said.
“So far, the service seems to run very well under Shaun and Kate’s leadership at the post office, with the support of Australia Post.
“Residents in the new developments in Moama expect to have the same access to these services as other residents, which is fair and understandable — and something I have been pleased to fight for.”
Ms Ley added that with the Moama population continuing to grow, it would not be long before another expansion was needed.
“Last time I visited Moama I saw for myself how quickly the town is growing, with new developments starting up regularly,” she said.
“I expect that there will be further demand for postal services at this rate of growth in Moama.”
