Montanah Southern wins Moama Lions Junior Public Speaking District Final

MOAMA Anglican Grammar student Montanah Southern has won this year’s Lions Junior Public Speaking District Final with her healthy habits and impressive literature choices.

Twelve students took part in the district final in Tongala on August 25 where they were tasked with presenting a speech varying from 3-5 minutes depending on age

The speakers were from Cohuna, Tocumwal, Numurkah, Katamatite, Kiewa Valley and Thurgoona.

Riding the high of nerves and excitement, Year 5 student Montanah Southern wowed the judged with a speech on her favourite book.

“My favourite book is Everything I’ve Never Said by Samantha Wheeler,” she said.“At the final, we also had to do a one-minute impromptu speech on what food we don’t like, I did my speech on junk food.“I don’t like junk food because it makes you obese and rots your teeth.”

The Lions Club have hosted the district public speaking final for more than 10 years.

Moama Lions Club president Robert Hardwick said it was an important event which helps develop speaking skills that will be an asset to students later in life.

“This competition is run for primary students in Grades 3-6," Mr Hardwick said.

“It gives students the chance to develop the important ability to speak in public.”
