Echuca United will now join district rivals Moama and Tongala on the sidelines after the Magpies and Blues withdrew from any potential competition last week.
Eagles president Ian Johnson said he was not shocked the decision had been made.
“It’s disappointing that our Murray League players aren’t going to be able to get out on the ground,” he said.
“Once the (NSW) border closed it was always going to be difficult for any sort of competition to go ahead.”
Murray League general manager Dale Norman held similar views to those of Johnson.
“It’s bitterly disappointing that we have to cancel the season,” Norman said.
“The executive and clubs had held out hope that we might be able to form a competition.
“We looked at a range of options but after further government restrictions were imposed on the NSW-Victorian border it was agreed that it would not be viable to continue.”
Johnson said United had already made plans to keep their kids on the field with the club approaching the Goulburn Campaspe League to field its under 14 side in the competition.
“Our junior president Daryl Poole had a meeting with the league officials on Monday night,” Johnson said.
“That competition doesn’t have an official start date yet so we’re hopeful that we will hear more in the coming days.
“It would be terrific for our under 14s if they are able to play some competitive matches.”
While the under 17s won’t compete in an official competition, Johnson said they would continue to train twice a week.
“We want to keep our players engaged for as long as possible,” he said.
“It’s good for their mental health and wellbeing if they can get out and have a kick with their mates.
“It will also play an important role in helping us maintain players for next year.”
In a statement, the Murray League also thanked the clubs for their support during this trying time.
“The Murray FNL executive acknowledge the club presidents for their trust and input. The collaborative approach and understanding have ensured the Murray FNL remains strong and united in this unprecedented time,” the statement said.
“The Murray FNL’s number one priority has always been the safety and wellbeing of our communities.
“Our clubs rely on these communities for supporters, players, umpires, officials and volunteers.”
Despite the Murray League cancellation, Echuca United will still have two teams in Shepparton District Junior League action on Sunday.
The youth girls will travel to play Tatura, while the under 16s take on Echuca.
