The improvement works are designed to enhance safety, comfort and usability for local families.
Works include the installation of a new fence around the playground, responding to community feedback and helping create a safer, more secure play environment for children and carers.
The fencing works are being undertaken by a contractor and are expected to be completed within 10 days, weather permitting.
During this period, the playground will remain open with minimal disruption to users; however, visitors are asked to be mindful of works occurring on site, including the possibility of loud noise.
Further improvements are also planned, with two large shade sails scheduled for installation in early May.
The additional shade will provide welcome relief during warmer weather and support longer, more comfortable playtime throughout the summer months.
Benalla Mayor Bernie Hearn said these improvements were something the community has asked for, and council was thrilled to be able to deliver a project that enhanced safety and comfort for families using Mackellar St Reserve.
“The new fencing provides greater peace of mind for parents and carers, while the shade sails create a more inviting space where children can play safely during the warmer months,” she said.
“Accessible, safe and comfortable play spaces encourage outdoor activity, social interaction and healthy lifestyles, and these upgrades will ensure Mackellar St Reserve continues to be a valued local destination for families.
“Council appreciates the community’s patience while works are completed and looks forward to delivering these improvements for residents to enjoy.”
