Police urge drivers to take care at new zebra crossing

Fab four: Benalla Police officers are concerned cars have not been slowing for this new crossing on Fawckner Dve.

Benalla Police have received reports by concerned members of the public that drivers have not been stopping for pedestrians at a new zebra crossing.

This has resulted in near misses with potential for serious injuries to pedestrians.

The new pedestrian crossing in question has been installed on Fawckner Dve in Benalla, behind Australia Post.

This pedestrian crossing has been designed to provide a safe place for pedestrians to cross from the Fawckner Dve carpark to shops on Bridge St.

Police would like to remind drivers of the road safety road rules, which state: “A driver approaching a pedestrian crossing must drive at a speed at which the driver can, if necessary, stop safely before the crossing” and “A driver must give way to any pedestrian on or entering a pedestrian crossing.”

Police will be proactively enforcing the road rules around this pedestrian crossing and other crossings throughout Benalla with the assistance of Benalla Rural City Council.
