According to the Bureau of Meteorology, there has been increased solar activity over the past few days with two Coronal Mass Ejections, or CMEs, being released from the Sun.
CMEs are huge bursts of high-energy plasma that shoot out from the sun’s surface and travel through space.
When they reach earth, they interact with the planet’s magnetic field and atmosphere, creating bright and colourful auroras in the night sky.
G4 geomagnetic storm conditions have been predicted for tonight, Wednesday, November 12, with the two CMEs expected to reach earth close together.
The best way to view the Aurora Australis is to head away from city lights into dark outdoor areas, look south, and watch any time after sunset.
No exact time has been predicted, but for updates, visit Facebook pages Aurora Hunters United or Bureau of Meteorology.
Make sure to charge your phone and camera batteries so you don’t miss the chance to capture some beautiful aurora shots.
Good luck and happy aurora hunting.
