The council’s Local Laws teams will target outstanding animal registrations in the first week of August, coinciding with ongoing efforts to address the issue.
Council chief executive Geoff Rollinson said registering or microchipping a cat or dog was crucial to a fast reunion with a beloved pet.
“On average, our Local Laws team receives eight telephone calls each week regarding missing cats and dogs,” he said.
“We would like to see this number reduced to as low as possible.”
The local laws team will conduct spot checks for unregistered animals, targeting young dogs and cats.
All cats and dogs over three months old must be registered, with fines of $407 issued to pet owners with unregistered animals above this age.
Animal registration fees range from $50.65 for sterilised dogs and cats to $154.65 for unsterilised dogs and cats.
Reduced fees are available for pensioners and for animals over 10 years old, that are members of applicable organisations, or dogs that have completed obedience training.
