CVBD bowls news
Midweek pennant semi-finals were played on Friday at Rochester, City of Echuca and Rich River.
Five of the six matches played had close results with under four shots separating them.
Division one saw both matches come down to the last end. Moama defeated Echuca and Deniliquin defeated Mathoura.
Moama go straight into the grand final while Deniliquin will play Echuca in the preliminary final. This is a repeat of last year’s results.
Although Mathoura went out, they should be pleased with their season – their first in division one.
In division two, Moama had a clear win over Rich River. Moama are straight through to the grand final and Rich River will play Elmore in the preliminary.
Elmore’s match to defeat Echuca was a nail-biting affair.
Division three saw Moama claim a one-shot victory over Echuca, who will now play Rich River. Rich River defeated Tongala, also by a single shot.
Preliminary finals will be played at Rochester. The welcome will be at 9am.
The weekend pennant re-instated match (from January 26) will be played the following Saturday. The finals have all been put back a week and the region final has not been affected by this change.
In division one Moama is clearly on top, but the positions of the next four teams can change. Rich River play Echuca and Deniliquin play Tongala, so they are all in charge of their own destiny.
Division two sees Moama on top of the ladder and Echuca will remain in the four, but which teams make up the four can change.
Mathoura, Deniliquin and Rochester will all be working hard to take enough points to secure a position.
In division three Rochester, Moama and Echuca will definitely play finals. It is possible for the ladder to change, but as Deniliquin RSL is playing Rochester, they will have to work hard to get enough points to put Deniliquin out.
Division four sees the top four teams firmly entrenched. Moama, Mathoura, Lockington and Rich River will all play finals, but there still may be positional changes within the four.
In division five, Deni RSL, Moama Red and Moama Green are clearly in the four, but the last position can alter. Depending on this week’s results Elmore, Mathoura or Echuca could take fourth.
Elmore’s women’s fours team of Evelyn Locke, Ann Williams, Ina Heywood and Lorna Wilson and Rochester’s men’s triples team of David Keenan, Ash Vesty and Cameron Keenan should be congratulated on their successes at Bendigo Bowling Club in the regional finals.
On Sunday at White Hills Bowling Club, CVBD representatives will again be vying for the right to represent the Bendigo-Campaspe region at championship week.
In the morning, Mia Young and Maryann Spizer (Moama) will play Carol Gallop and Anne Boreham from Bendigo East in the women’s pairs.
In the men’s pairs, Ash Vesty and Cameron Keenan (Rochester) will meet Wayne Naughton and Ken Rusbridge from Eaglehawk.
The mixed pairs match will be between Philip Thorn and Pat Schram (Echuca) and Susan Howes and Andrew Brown, a composite team.
The singles matches will be played in the afternoon. Jill Grimshaw (Deniliquin) will play Julie Ross from Golden Square in the women’s singles and Rob Wastell (Moama) will meet Ken Rusbridge from Eaglehawk in the men’s singles.

Congratulations to the club’s midweek pennant side on a team performance in their first year of playing in division one, losing to Deniliquin by three shots in their first finals appearance, be proud of the year.
Lockington Bowls Club
The women played for the coveted Alys Humbert Club Pairs on the previous Tuesday in varied conditions including sun, rain and wind.
However all soldiered on to complete the games. The winning pair comprised Ann Lowrie and Kath Palmer (skip) in a fine display of bowls.
Runners-up were Joy Weller and Phylis MacFarlane (skip) with Weller also winning the voucher.
In the CVBD weekend pennant the club fared well to have division two play out a thrilling 66-all tie with Mathoura while division four collected all points in a 110-40 win over Ky Valley View.
In the division two clash the Graeme Turner four was the only winning rink. Division four had all rinks winning in a mammoth victory.
With one round to be completed the division four team remains in third position on the premiership ladder.
However, with the shock losses to Moama and Mathoura on Saturday the door remains ajar for Lockington to grab a second chance if the club defeats City of Echuca.
In the CVBD midweek pennant competition the semi-finals were hotly contested with small margins separating teams in all divisions.
Division one: Moama defeated City of Echuca 67-63, Deniliquin defeated Mathoura 75-72.
Division two: Moama defeated Rich River 93-61, Elmore defeated City of Echuca 74-71.

Another game completed was the match between the valiant Dave Thomas and club champion Ray Hanson. Hanson was able to control the mat to record an emphatic victory and proceed to the next round.
The Friday evening practice and cold meat and salad meal was well attended, with Ken Main missing out on the lucky members draw.
