Needle, thread and heart — that’s all it took to turn a school holiday afternoon into a lifeline for wildlife in need.

RiverConnect, alongside the Animal Rescue Craft Group — Goulburn Valley, Goulburn Murray Landcare Network, Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project and Bohollow Wildlife Shelter, hosted a Bushfire Assistance for Wildlife Crafternoon that brought the community together for a powerful cause.
Held on Wednesday, January 21 at KidsTown’s Munch ’n’ Crunch Rooms, the free event welcomed families, children and adults to drop in and lend a hand.
Tables buzzed with activity as people sewed, knitted, crocheted, cut patterns, ironed and even tackled simple metal work.
The result? A heartening collection of wildlife pouches, bat wraps, hanging bags, knitted and crocheted nests and wire possum dreys — all urgently needed by local and regional wildlife carers responding to animals affected by the recent heatwave and bushfires.
Kids learned new craft skills and added handwritten messages of support to each handmade item, giving every donation a personal and heartfelt touch.
“It’s really about giving a hobby purpose,” RiverConnect education officer Emily Lange said.
“So many people knit, sew and crochet at home — being able to put those skills to use in a time of need is incredibly meaningful.
“All year round, donations like this are needed.
“Wildlife carers dedicate their lives, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. The least we can do is help provide the resources they need.”
Kelly Rummery from ARC agreed, saying the event was for everyone.
“People brought their own sewing machines, kids were cutting fabric — it was an activity for the young and old,” she said.
“And the animals don’t care what it looks like — they just need something warm, safe and supportive.”
Finished items will now support animals in care with Kirsty, Deb and Kylie at Bohollow Wildlife Shelter.
Those unable to attend can still help by donating at Greater Shepparton City Council’s customer service centre, 90 Welsford St, Shepparton.
