St Joseph’s College launched its Project Compassion Fundraising Campaign with a pancake stall for Shrove Tuesday yesterday.
Shrove Tuesday, otherwise known as Pancake Tuesday, is a day of celebration and feast before the commencement of Lent.
Ash Wednesday, recognised on March 2 this year, marks the beginning of Lent on the Christian calendar.
Lent is the 40 days leading up to Easter and is a time for spring cleaning our lives and renewing our faith in Christ through fasting, praying and giving to those in need.
During the Season of Lent, St Joseph’s College raises funds to support Caritas’ aid and development work in Australia and internationally.
Caritas’ Project Compassion is St Joseph’s major fundraiser for the term and they have a great reputation for their generosity in support of this charity and hope to maintain this in 2022.
Bishop Shane, of the Diocese of Sandhurst, is a proud supporter of the work of Caritas and he has a message for all those who attend Catholic schools in the Diocese.
“For many decades now, Project Compassion has been an integral part of the celebration of Lent in Australia,” Bishop Shane said.
“It is the major fundraising activity of Caritas Australia each year and enables Caritas to support a wide range of critically needed projects around the world.
“Not only does Project Compassion give us a very effective vehicle for assisting those in need, but it also works to shape our life as a Church to reflect the missionary outreach and service to which Jesus calls us.
“Over these last two years, those assisted by Caritas have been particularly impacted by COVID.
“This year’s Project Compassion theme, For all Future Generations, reminds us that our contribution not only assists their lives, but also helps move towards long-term solutions to global issues.
“Despite the challenges of COVID restrictions, Project Compassion has continued to receive strong support in the Sandhurst Diocese, which I appreciate very much.
“I am confident that this will continue to be the case, and I warmly commend the 2022 campaign to you.”
During Lent, St Joseph’s will be running a number of fundraising activities including bake sales and sausage sizzles and will also be accepting online donations from its college community.
