Spreading the Christmas Cheer is personal for the Echuca-Moama Salvation Army.

Christmas Cheer is the name of the organisation’s annual toy drive which has been operating for the best part of four decades.

Echuca-Moama Salvation Army auxiliary lieutenant Sonia Edwards said this year’s Christmas Cheer was one of the more important following a 2022 that had tested many in the community.

“Christmas is always the busiest time of the year for The Salvos, but add a turbulent year with drastic increases to the cost of living and the recent flood disaster,” Lieut Edwards said.

“We’re expecting even more individuals and families will need support so that no-one is left in need and no child goes without a gift on Christmas Day.

“We’re calling on the kindness, generosity and giving spirit of the local community to help make Christmas a joyful time for everyone.”

Lieut Edwards said the Echuca-Moama community’s support of the Christmas Cheer appeal had been magnificent throughout the years.

“We live in a very generous community,” she said.

“If you can afford to lend a hand or make a donation, you’ll be making a huge difference to those locals who are really struggling.”

In 2021, toys were provided to 212 children, with $2000 in food vouchers and other material aid distributed.

Lieut Edwards said the major needs for the Christmas Cheer appeal were new toys and non-perishable food.

“Donations can be made at three locations,” she said.

“The Salvo Hall, located at 50-52 Sturt St, Echuca, the Thrift Shop at 119 Ogilvie Ave or the Echuca K-Hub (corner Pakenham and Nish Sts).

“The K-Hub has a wishing tree for the toys.”

Lieut Edwards encouraged people in need to get in contact.

“For those needing food or gifts, or feeling lonely this Christmas, please reach out to us at Echuca-Moama Salvos or by calling 5482 6722 to register for assistance,” she said.

Lieut Edwards added the Salvation Army had a number of events, church services and community programs during the festive season.
