The group meets at the Lions Community Care Centre, opposite the Tocumwal hospital and next to the tennis court, and comprises a faithful group of dedicated individuals who attend each week.
The group participates in traditional arts and craft activities such as sewing, knitting and crochet.
However the group also tries to add a modern twist to its work and undertakes activities such as mixed media.
Though the group is craft-orientated, members don’t necessarily need to have any experience at all.
Tocumwal Girls Shed leader Anne Jones says the group caters to people of all experience levels and can teach newcomers most skills.
“We have experienced crafts people come out that can help in most crafts.”
This year the group will be undertaking special projects which will include mosaic making, fabric painting and macrame.
For those thinking about joining Mrs Jones said the group provided company, friendship and a space for those with an interest in arts and craft.
“The group provides a warm and welcoming environment for those seeking friendship or wanting to learn a craft or needing help to finish their project.”
Recently the group was granted funds by the Strawberry Fields Community Grants Fund which allowed them to purchase an AccuQuilt fabric-cutting machine.
The group takes part in several charitable initiatives, which has included making hundreds of child-sized quilts for the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.
Other charitable initiatives include making bags for breast cancer patients as well as making and delivering 69 quilts to bushfire victims in north-east Victoria.
The group also supports other charitable workshops.
“This year our special charity is Tocumwal Can Assist and we are raffling a beautiful quilt,” Mrs Jones said.
The group welcomes women of all ages and Mrs Jones said younger people were most welcome and traditionally fit in quite well.
“They (young people) have fit in very well and have shown a lot of interest in crafts.”
Morning tea is provided however attendees do bring their own lunch.
