In late 2022, Tomorrow Today received funding from the Paul Ramsay Foundation to develop and implement a program to increase the capability and confidence of parents and caregivers of children during the critical first 1000 days of life (from conception to age two).
The program will match parents with a volunteer community connector, who assists them to connect with the resources and support they need in the Benalla community.
This can include antenatal care and early childhood and parent resources.
ConnectParent builds on Tomorrow Today’s successful PEEP program, which supports more than 80 per cent of Benalla parents with children aged 0-5.
Tomorrow Today’s executive officer Jodie Fleming said it was a great program for the community to have access to.
“The concept grew out of community conversations at the Benalla Early Years Forum hosted by Tomorrow Today, the Department of Education and Training and Benalla Rural City Council,” Ms Fleming said.
“At the forum, the Benalla community identified a strong need to improve support for parents before a baby is born.
“Our volunteer connectors will help parents-to-be and new parents give their child the best start to life.
“We’re looking for people who have a caring and compassionate nature, are willing to learn new skills and are interested in supporting local families to thrive.”
Community connectors will receive full training, with a particular focus on active listening and other skills they will need to assist the family or individual they are paired with.
Volunteers will receive regular contact from the ConnectParent supervisor and will be able to attend refresher training and debriefing with other connectors.
