The Blues - who will remain in eighth place at the end of the split round - fell to fellow top eight side Finley by 13 goals on Saturday afternoon, a result that could easily have seen them fall out of the top eight with just two rounds remaining.
But a surprise loss for Congupna to Nathalia has left the Blues in their finals position, while also creating a new challenger in the Purps.
The Blues sit on seven wins, one more than both Congupna and Nathalia, but have the worst percentage of the three clubs battling for the final spot.
The next challenge for the Blues does not get any easier, as Echuca United, one of the most dominant sides in the competition, await them directly after the second half of the split round.
The Blues will close out their season the following week against Nathalia in a match that could have major finals ramifications.
Blues coach Caddison Mulholland was unavailable for comment.
