Tongala residents and their four-legged friends celebrated the official opening of the town’s first off-leash dog park on Monday, September 22.

Around 50 attendees took their pooches to Brose Reserve at 10.30am, with the cohort being the first allowed through the park gates.

Uncle Rick Ronnan led the opening with a smoking ceremony, welcoming attendees to Country and highlighting the area’s natural assets.

“We’ve got the best country in the world, and Tongala is a beautiful place as well,” he said.
“I’d also like to acknowledge all the contributions that Aboriginal people have made, and non-Aboriginal people have made, in this country that we all live in and share together.”

“The project came directly from the community as one of the short-term priorities in the Tongala Place Based Plan,” he said.
“This park will be a fantastic addition for all our dogs ... but it will also provide a space for community connection and wellbeing.”

Mayor Mackrell noted the park was made possible with support from the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
Tongala Place Based Plan committee chair Jason Kelley said he was happy with the turnout, and hoped future projects led by the committee would come to fruition sooner.

“(The project) actually started in 2021, so hopefully the other quick wins are a little bit faster than four and a half years,” he said.
“Hopefully the dogs enjoy it, hopefully you’ll enjoy it, and hopefully the community will appreciate it.”

Mr Kelley thanked the council, and Cr Mackrell said it was great to see the community’s aspirations come to life.
The first 30 dogs through the gates were rewarded with free treats, and free frisbees and dog balls were also on offer from the council.
