The driver was making his way in to Deniliquin and stopped on Davidson St to investigate about 10am.
A rear tyre had ignited, emitting a plume of smoke.
Passing motorists, including the driver of a stock crate travelling in the opposite direction, stopped to render assistance and help direct traffic around the incident.
Using fire extinguishers, they managed to suppress most of the flames before emergency services arrived.
Deniliquin Fire + Rescue NSW and Deniliquin Police arrived a short time later.
Fire Captain Martin Smith said due to the amount of heat still emitting from the rear of the truck, firefighters used their hose line to cool down the brake drum and rim.
A thermal imaging camera was also used to look for problem areas before firefighters left the scene.
Deniliquin Police Detective Chief Inspector Mick Fuller said police assisted with traffic management, and confirmed noone was injured as a result of the fire.
