Who do you barrack for and how will they go?

Puppy love: Ross Veale is a Bulldog through and through and he says he can still remember Footscray’s 1954 flag “like it was yesterday”. Veale is a life-long Dogs fan and was lucky enough to be at the grand final in ’54. Sixty-two years later, he said the 2016 premiership was just as special. This season, Veale said he thought the Dogs should finish in the top four.
Sydney-Vince Jessen (far left) was a trainer with Sydney Football Club during the 1980s. His grandmother took him to the South Melbourne games when he was young and he got to see the great Bob Skilton. “I joined South Melbourne as a trainer as I loved the footy club and since I wasn’t that good as a player it was the next best thing. I predict they will finish seventh this year and my favourite player is Isaac Heeney.”
Blue bagger: Patrick Jeffreys was born into a Carlton family and joked that he didn’t get a choice about who he supported. Even so, he is happy to be a Blue Bagger. He says he enjoys watching the Blues play and getting to go to as many games as he can. He likes the style of Patrick Cripps, and said the midfielder was his favourite player. Jeffreys says he thinks Carlton will finish in the top 10 this season and hopefully make the finals.
A Cat, Kangaroo and Port boy: Easton Carlile, left, is hoping to see his Cats win another flag this season. He said Geelong were great to watch and he enjoyed watching his favourite player Jeremy Cameron out on the field. This year he is hoping to see the Cats get a few more wins and go deep into the finals. Campbell Orr, middle, is the lone North Melbourne fan in his family, but he does not mind. He said one of his favourite things about going for the Kangaroos was that he was a little bit different because not many people go for them. His favourite player is Jack Ziebel and this season he’s hoping to see the Kangas win a few more games and finish off the bottom. Lenny Griffiths, right, has a simple reason for going for Port Adelaide – Ollie Wines. His mum used to teach Wines in primary school, and he said his whole family goes for Port. Wines is of course Lenny’s favourite player and he idolises his leadership. This year Lenny thinks the Power has a good chance at a top-four finish and he hopes they can bring home a flag.
Freo fans: Jan Schultz is a recent Fremantle convert – your son being drafted by the club will force you to switch allegiances. Jan, left, and her daughter Courtney, right, were in Perth to watch her son Lachie make his debut for the Dockers, and Jan said she was enjoying supporting her new club. Her favourite Freo memory was getting to see Lachie’s debut and watching the Dockers beat West Coast last year. She says she thinks the Dockers are on the way up and she’s going all in this year, tipping Freo to win the flag.
Jimmy’s jumper: Ian Campbell has been a Bombers fan ever since he can remember. He said he cannot remember why he first picked Essendon as a youngster, but he said he had always loved the club. Campbell said he liked the direction the club was heading in and thought they had a bright future ahead with a good young list coming through. Tim Watson, Michael Long and James Hird are his all-time favourite players. He said Essendon should make the top eight this year, but where exactly they would finish was anyone’s guess.
Black and white for life: “Having inherited the Magpies from my father I have now waivered, despite recent hiccups. I will never forget that 1977 drawn grand final, and the accident on my bike.” Rohan Aldous, Riv Herald Editor. Photo: Steve Huntley
