Yooralla senior group manager Jenifer Morris-Cosgriff, said the op shop wouldn’t have made it to 50 years without the unwavering support of the Benalla Community
“We’ve survived changes in premises, the dissolution of the Ballandella Ladies Auxiliary, changes in ownership, a global pandemic, and all the other challenges that face the retail sector,” she said.
Ms Morris-Cosgriff said the shop’s success and longevity were a testament to its volunteers.
“The success and longevity of the op shop has, and continues to be, largely due to the enthusiasm and dedication of an incredible band of volunteers,” she said.
“They are the heart of the Benalla op shop.
“Their kindness, enthusiasm and community spirit have carried us through every chapter of our history.”
Since opening in 1975, the op shop has been a staple of the Benalla community, moving from its original location in Carrier St to a location in Nunn St — before moving to a larger premises further down the same street in 2020.
Originally established by the Ladies Auxiliary as the ‘Ballandella Bargain Centre’, the op-shop provided financial support for the Ballandella Day Training Centre.
Regardless of the location, it has become a much-loved part of Benalla life, not only as a treasure trove for shoppers, but as a hub of connection and purpose for local volunteers and people with disability.
To mark this special milestone, Yooralla is inviting community members, past volunteers and supporters to join a 50th anniversary morning tea on Wednesday, October 29 from noon to 2pm at the Yooralla Benalla Community Hub at 58 Mansfield Rd.
Tea, coffee and light refreshments will be provided.
