Someone can come along and give us a compliment or encouragement and it makes our day.
On the other hand, someone can give criticism or say something overly harsh and it can last a lifetime.
The Bible understands this. Proverbs 15:4 says “The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.”
Proverbs 18:21 says “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
It’s safe to say that many of us have been blessed for the most part growing up and in our lives.
We have had people that encouraged us and used their words as a blessing.
Unfortunately for some, they grew up in an environment where words were used to wound.
My concern today is, how do you use your words?
With Jesus’ help it’s possible for us to break a cycle of hurt and wounding.
To understand this we need to explore Jesus’ words in our lives.
I would encourage you to get a Bible, a notebook and a pen and read through the first four books of the New Testament.
As you go through Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, ask the following questions: What are Jesus’ words? Do they apply to me? How would he like my words to be used?
Society seems to be on edge and getting edgier.
There seems to be a growing aggression where people lash out against each other.
My office is on a busy road in Echuca. I regularly hear conflicts around our building from passers-by.
I often talk to people who have conflicts with their neighbours or in the work place or with family members.
Now, I’m not trying to complain or make things worse.
I believe that every person can make a positive difference with our families, friends neighbours and workmates.
With Jesus’ help we can give words that have life and blessings. It starts with a commitment by saying my words will bring life.
The Apostle Paul in 1 Thessalonians 5:11 says “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”
In Ephesians 4:29 he says “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
If anyone has used their words to cause you pain and hurt you, I am sorry. More importantly though, Jesus is sorry.
You can be freed from the damage by Jesus, whose words are life. You just have to trust him and let him in to your whole life.
