Garry Seamer is the Berrigan Community Bowls Club Open 100-up champion for 2020/21 after a convincing win over Matt Hansen 103-89 on Thursday evening. Both players shared a 14 handicap so started from scratch.
Seamer used his backhand effectively to take an early lead, but Hansen was able to get himself back into the match, before Seamer again took and retained the ascendancy after the 10th end.
‘‘I had beaten a few good players to get up to the final,’’ Seamer said.
‘‘I got off to a good start but he caught up, so I changed to a forehand style like Matt was using and that seemed to work.’’
Seamer started playing competitive bowls for the club three years ago.
He is the current chair of the Berrigan Community Bowls and Golf Club and acting Bowling Club president.
‘‘This is the second club competition and the first handicap event I’ve won since I started playing competitively.
‘‘The president gets to win something every now and then don’t they?’’ he said with a laugh.
He praised the efforts of members and volunteers, saying ‘‘our volunteers have the bowling greens in good condition and the club is evolving’’.
