The Murray Football League clash was closely fought through much of the game, but the Blues consistently had the edge over the Tigers in a subversion of recent form.
While Tonny came into the game 1-4, Cobram was flying high, an unbeaten 5-0 before the Blues brought them back to earth with a marquee performance.
After Tongala kicked the opening goal, Cobram would grab the lead with two straight before the Blues would match their efforts at the end of the term to regain the advantage by four at the first break.
Tonny really stamped its authority in the second, kicking three unanswered to start the term, and four in total, in an unusual period that saw the teams combine for five majors and no minor scores.
Leading by north of 20, Tongala continued its momentum with the first goal of the second half, again outperforming the Tigers with three majors to two in the period.
Cobram didn’t want to go quietly, and showed some of the form that led it to its impressive start to the year, winning the fourth handily but still falling 15 points short to a jubilant Blues.
The final score read Tongala 11.7 (73), Cobram 9.4 (58).
Nate Dear led all scorers with three majors for the Blues, while Sam Cipriani and Kyle Fitzgerald contributed two each.
The result over one of the league’s early heavyweights is a statement win for Tongala, and the best result so far under Stephen Hammond’s leadership.
The side will hope this signals a turnaround in fortunes, as the side currently still languishes in eighth place with a 2-4 record, albeit after a couple of nail-biting defeats in the early rounds.
A current mid-table rival in Deniliquin Rams (3-3) is the assignment next weekend, with Tongala hosting the clash at Tongala Recreation Reserve.
