Brennan won his way through to the final after a series of intense qualifying matches, including an epic 25-24 win against previous winner Brad Holland.
Holland actually won the Victorian men’s singles title in 2013 and last year was recognised as the Bowls Australia Coach of the Year, having guided South Bendigo to the Bendigo league title.
Holland led by 10 shots early in the game and the result came down to the last bowl of the match.
“He needed one and I needed three on the last end. I was holding a shot and ended up making three when my last bowl tipped one of his over,” Brennan said.
Brennan’s semi-final win against Holland projected him into the final against Steamers Premier League teammate Kevin Anderson – who he had never played before in a singles match.
He said earlier this week that the final day of the event was “big”, having to complete three matches in order to claim the title.
“I’ve won it once before. Not in this region, when it was called the group singles,” Brennan said.
Brennan beat Josh Matthews from Bendigo in the third round, 25-22, then was a 25-17 winner against Steamers teammate Glenn Dorward.
“I haven’t played against Glenn much, I’ve played with him more often,” he said.
Dorward is playing third to Kevin Anderson in Premier League competition, but at the start of the year was in the same rink as Brennan.
“We had a bit of a change around when I took up the skipping role.
“But I’ve played a lot with Glenn at tournaments,” he said.
Brennan lost in the second round of the Moama singles club championship, which was ironically won by Anderson.
He will now compete against the other 16 regional champions at the state finals event in May, when singles, pairs and fours will all play at the same time.
“That event has traditionally been at Bendigo, but I am not sure if it is there again.
“The Moama women’s fours are playing at the same event and maybe even Sandra Connolly,” he said.
Connolly is in the final of the women’s state singles event, which will be contested in a fortnight.
In the meantime, Brennan will play this week at Rich River’s five-a-side tournament with brother Kevin Brenann, Dorward, Stan Barker and Graeme O’Brien.
“I have played in this tournament most years since it started,’’ Brennan said.
“It is tournament season at the moment, we play at Swan Hill next week and there is another event at Deniliquin at Easter.”
Brennan’s Moama Steamers Premier League rink has been in great form for the past month.
“We are all playing well at the moment. Everyone is contributing,’’ he said.
“But there is plenty of competition and I probably rank Eaglehawk as the best side, on paper and on the rink.
“All the clubs are dangerous in this competition.”
Brennan said he would like to see another Campaspe team in the competition.
“We are enjoying it very much. It’s a good concept, it’s tough, but good,” he said.
·Sandra Connolly will contest the final of the women’s state singles after qualifying matches ran over time and the final was rescheduled for later this month.
Connolly beat Moama teammate Beverley Button in the second round, after a first round bye, then had a four-shot win against Sharon Koch in the quarter-final.
Her semi-final win was a 25-16 win against Lee Harris, setting up a final showdown with Kangaroo Flat’s Susan Howes.
