The match was scheduled for early May in round two but was postponed to June 1.
The River Rats’ Green and White sides took to the field in an encounter that wasn’t present in previous seasons, the title-winning women’s team splitting into two outfits for 2025 to integrate some of the club’s younger players with the experienced heads.
White came into the game the underdog, not only because Green was sitting higher on the ladder, but it was also backing up a day after taking on Strikers Hockey Club in Shepparton in its regularly scheduled match for the week.
Green, conversely, came in fresh with the bye in round five at the weekend.
There wasn’t a heap between the sides in the opening half.
Green got out to a lead, perennial goal threat Courtney Thompson one of the Green names to get on the scoresheet early, but White had some good passages of play.
Fill-in Leah Kerr made some roving forward runs and opened her side’s account, while Alexandra Wheeler was also looking to take on the Green defence.
Leah Kerr made a number of useful attacking forays for White, eventually slotting the side’s lone goal.
The second half swung more in Green’s favour, weary White legs from those backing up for their second game in as many days taking their toll, and Green was able to push for a strong 7-1 win at the final whistle.
Thompson finished with three goals, while Tiana Thorpe, Jess Crisp, Agostina Traglia, and fill-in Serena Monigatti all contributed one.
The win pushes Green back into second place on the ladder, unbeaten Shepparton Youth Club holding sway after a complete cycle of fixtures.
A day earlier, White found itself in a similar fixture against Strikers, which also finished 7-1 against the River Rats.
Renee Davison was the Echuca-Moama scorer on Saturday, while Taya Hayes slotted four to lead Strikers.
White has picked up one win from its first four fixtures.
