All three pennant teams came away with a win on Tuesday, November 15.
The A2 side played St James at home. Raz Porter’s team carried the overall win with 27 shots up, Allen Bartlett’s team had a 1 shot win and Andy Dicken’s team went down by 8 shots. Overall, the side won by 20 shots which cements their position on top of the ladder.
The B1 side travelled to Milawa and had a narrow win with 5 shots up overall. Dave Lewis’s team made a good comeback to go down by 4, Janet Davis’s team also clawed their way back into the game to go down by 5 shots. Alan Holmquest’s team had a strong finish to win with 14 shots up. They are third on the ladder.
The B2 side played Beechworth at home. Peter Mills’ team went down by 12 shots, but the 1 shot win by Roly Nixon’s team and the 13-shot win by Frank Gee’s team gave the side a nail biting 2 shot win overall. They are first on the ladder.
There was no Saturday pennant due to holding of the Victorian Open in Shepparton.
Club Singles
In the lady’s competition, Anne Summerill defeated Janet Davis 25-12, Judy Black and Rhonda Clark played 32 ends before Judy won, 25-24. Maree Jones defeated Lynne Mills 25 to 23 in another tight game.
The semi-finals will be between Julie Holmquest and Judy Black and Anne Summerill and Maree Jones.
In the men’s, Raz Porter defeated Lex Thornton 25 to 13 and Tony Fierenzi defeated Jeff Nixon 25 to 14.
Federation Triples
On Saturday, November 19 and Sunday, November 20, the Men’s Federation Triples was run after a two year break due to Covid.
There were 22 teams vying for the $6000 prize money provided by the Corowa RSL Club. Teams came from Leeton, Griffith, Yarrawonga, Wangaratta, Warrnambool, Kiewa, Berrigan, Cohuna, Howlong, Rutherglen and Corowa Civic.
After 5 games the winners were: 1st -Ray Irvine, Greg Green and Gary Presnell from Y. M.G.C.R.: 2nd- Tim Barnes, G. Stockton and A. Reynolds from Leeton: 3rd- Chris Langdon, Murray Scown and Perry Vaccara from Rutherglen: 4th – Phil Slater, John Boyd and Ray Johnson from Howlong: 5th -Paul Kennedy (Glenroy) and Geoff Smethurst and Col Hendren from Corowa Civic. The best game winners were Ian Lewis, Tom Webb and John White from Corowa Civic: Barry Hutchinson, Garry Seamer and Roger Reynoldson from Berrigan: Dale Mastenbroek, G. Porter and B. Barton from Kiewa: Gary Turner and Raz Porter (Corowa RSL) and Col Webb (Corowa Civic) and M. Jeffery, Neville Cullen and A. Saunders from Griffith.
The Corner to corner, sponsored by Meat on the Murray was won by Tim Barnes of Leeton.
Corowa High School
The club welcomed 18 students from the Corowa High School for their weekly sport session on Wednesday, November 16. The majority were new to bowls so they were given some introductory coaching and next week will commence a 2 bowls triples competition amongst themselves.
Barefoot Bowls
This is available every Thursday from 6pm to 8.30pm. Come along and have a roll with your friends. On Thursday, December 1 a BBQ will also be held and names will be required for this night. Why not have a barefoot bowls event for your Christmas Party, bar facilities and equipment are available and food can be purchased through the RSL Club.
