Starting the day at 0-28 in pursuit of Nondies’ 140 for first innings points, Echuca opening pair Ewan Davidson and Curtis Townrow put together a brilliant opening stand of 109 before Townrow fell for 67, holing out off the bowling of Kyeran Ellery (1-30).
Davidson was the next to go, saluting a well-made half-century before departing for 51 at the hands of Zeb Ellwood (5-36), with Echuca reduced to 2-131.
Matt Hinks (26) and Kobyn James (15) led Echuca past the required 140 to secure the four points, batting on to reach 159 before Patrick Doyle (2-32) sent Hinks packing, with new batsman James Grixti (1) gone with the first ball of Doyle’s next over.
James followed shortly after, dismissed by Ellwood, sparking a mini collapse that reduced Echuca to 9-206, losing the final five wickets for just 33 runs.
But at nine wickets down, and with a lead of 66 runs, Echuca skipper Simon Maddox decided to declare, as his side set about pulling off an outright win.
Brendan Moyle (1-47) and Aidan Young (3-10) struck early to remove the Nondies opening duo of Karim Marcelle (12) and Patrick Doyle (12), leaving the home side at 2-26, which became 4-26 as Young removed both Will and Sam O’Shea for ducks.
Zeb Ellwood (5) fell victim to Curtis Townrow to leave Nondies struggling at 5-34, still 32 runs behind Echuca’s first innings total.
But the home side struggled to 67 before Shaun Haffenden (14) was removed, leaving Nondies at 6-67, but crucially, ahead by one run.
Archie Sussex proved a rock for Nondies-Cohuna, contributing 49 at number three before he was eventually removed, leaving the home side eight wickets down, which is where the match would end, as Nondies posted 8-115 in the second dig to avoid an outright defeat.
