Lockington Bowls Club
Another weekend of exciting bowls was played at the club with midweek pennant on Friday, then weekend pennant on Saturday with all divisions at home culminating with the Caledonian Hotel Mixed Pairs on Sunday.
Conditions were windy on all days, but the greens were in brilliant condition running 16 true seconds.
On Sunday, the club held the annual mixed pairs attracting entries from various clubs including Echuca, Elmore, Harcourt, Lockington, Rochester, Stanhope, Tongala, Mathoura, Moama and White Hills.
Club president Neil Haines welcomed all bowlers and trusted they enjoyed the ideal conditions, thanking the green staff Kevin Humbert and Les Brereton for their mighty effort in providing the impeccable greens.
On the greens, the competition was extreme as all teams were in a positive frame of mind.
At the completion of two games there were six teams undefeated and placed a lot of excitement on the final game three.
Only two teams survived the final match to take home the trophies. Based on a points system the winning pair were the husband and wife duo of Pam Limbrick and Stan Limbrick from Mathoura scoring 78 points.
Runners-up went to a local Lockington pairing in Phylis MacFarlane and Ken Main on 74 points.
Special competition winners included Mark Browne (Elmore), Rhonda Gallagher (Echuca), Chris Campbell (Echuca), Lorraine Appleby and Kristy Gillingham (Echuca).
It was pleasing to see that Gillingham had young 11-year-old Mac Campbell as a playing partner and he bowled really well only losing the one game.
Tournament secretary Chris Stewart thanked several members for their input in organising the event: Russell Shawcross for filling the field, Brian Kinnane for the sponsorship and Pauline Humbert for the special competition and presentation envelopes.
This was complemented by the excellent work of the ladies committee in the kitchen and a fine afternoon tea, including Rhayne Dennis for working at the bar.
Stewart mentioned that the club was pleased to see several of our new bowlers competing in the tournament and performing well.
Kim Ray and John Fisher lost the first game by one shot then won the last two games while picking up an elusive eight shots on one end.
The sponsors on the day were the Caledonian Hotel (Echuca) and Guns & Rousies Shearing Contractors, in which the club is extremely thankful.
In the midweek pennant competition, our women defeated Tongala 49-30 but it was not enough to make the final four as Deniliquin also won and made the four by 9.3 per cent. Results: Annette Brereton def R. Hosking 30-16; Phylis MacFarlane def B. Vistarini 19-14.
The Campaspe Area pennant weekend competition resulted in only one division greeting the judge.
Division three defeated Echuca 63-57 sharing the rinks. Results: G. Turner lost to M. Bennett 19-26; L. McInnes drew M. Clifford 18-18; S. Pavone d. T. Deenan 26-13.
Division three ended the season in second place behind Moama Steamers and will meet Moama Steamers in the semi-final to be played at Echuca Bowling Club on Saturday.
Division four had a rough day at the office losing to Mathoura 28-50 and both rinks went down. Results: N. Haines lost to G. Kerr 16-26; D. Thomas lost to G. Hulm 12-24.
Division five lost to Moama Steamers 28-49 to finish a promising year of bowls. Results: J. Whiteside lost to S. Sutton 18-20; L. Buchanan lost to Peggy Bell 10-29.
Best of bowling to all clubs in the final series.
Last Tuesday, the women played rinks at their social bowls. The winning four were Mary Thomas, Lorraine Appleby, Annie Haines, Annette Breteon (s) in a fine display of bowls.
On Tuesday evening there was a large field of 24 to play barefoot bowls. The winners were Ray Brereton, John Fisher and Neil Haines (s) two wins +14 shots ahead of Keifer Haines, Leon Laffy, Kim Ray (s) 2 wins +8.
In third place was Cindy Felmingham, Shane Felmingham, Anthony Westwood (s) two wins +6 followed by Jeff Carnie, David Engstrom, Dena Cook (s) +3.
The club hosted the 60-and-over competition on Wednesday which attracted 96 bowlers.
The winner on the day was the local rink comprising Ray Hanson, Ian Johnson, Graham Turner, Kevin Humbert (s).
Humbert proved to be a bit of an all-rounder after collecting the A-grade golf award at the Valley View Golf Club on Tuesday and also on the Saturday competition playing off a 12 handicap. Well done Kevin.
The women will be holding the annual Twilight Mixed Fours tournament on Tuesday, February 21 starting at 5pm. Contact Lorraine Appleby or Annie Haines for details.
The Friday evening barbecue and practice session was well attended with Russell Shawcross in attendance to collect the huge lucky members’ draw jackpot.
