Lockington Bowls Club
The Lockington Bowling Club was proud to host the Campaspe Area Pennant preliminary finals on Saturday, and what a day it was.
Brilliant bowling from all teams who participated, the excellent greens on offer and fine food provided by the hardworking ladies' committee plus ideal overcast weather conditions - no rain.
All this added up to a pleasant afternoon of bowls for the large crowd of spectators and supporters to witness.
A few anxious moments on each rink, but the bowlers were able to correct each episode.
The division one final between Moama and Stanhope was a replay of last season's grand final, where Moama scored a thrilling two shot victory.
However, the Stanhope squad was not going to be pressured this time around and produced some extraordinary bowls right from the outset.
Moama tried valiantly to stay in the match, but the margin was too great to overcome.
Stanhope won the final 77-37 (T. Hancock d. R. Young 23-16; R. Ponton d. R. Werner 28-9; G. Fitzpatrick d. G. Beattie 26-12).
In division two, the Echuca rinks survived a great scare from their Stanhope opponents after leading by nine shots with one rink finished and two rinks playing their final ends.
Like a bolt from the blue, the Echuca rinks dropped a six and two shots but managed to scrape into the grand final winning 66-65.
The division three final resulted in a victory for Moama, defeating Echuca 68-59 in a high standard performance.
The division four final provided a quality standard of bowls from the highly skilled Kyabram rinks as they upset their Echuca opponents to win 73-42 and all rinks up.
Division five was a real battle between the Deniliquin teams - Deniliquin Blue and Deniliquin White.
Both teams were desperate for success and the game was at fever pitch for the early stanza with scores very close.
After ten ends the Blue team led 11-10 then at 20 ends Blue still held a one shot advantage 21-20.
However, in the final stages of the game, Deniliquin Blue accelerated the scoring and won the game 49-36 with one team winning 30-17 and the other team sharing a tie at 19-all.
A great day of bowls and the club acknowledges the efforts from all members from the car park attendants, kitchen staff, bar staff, greens staff, and all members who attended the working bees prior to the preliminary finals.
The grand finals will be held at the Moama Bowling Club on Saturday.
Division One: Echuca v. Stanhope. Div 2: Moama v. Echuca. Div 3: Kyabram v. Moama. Div 4: Moama v. Kyabram. Div 5: Moama v. Deniliquin Blue.
Not much to report on the barefoot bowls after being washed out last Tuesday and again this week after 87 millimetres of rain Sunday and Monday.
Both greens were covered with water. Good for the garden?

Rochester Golf Club
Wednesday morning, 9-hole golf finally got underway after the hot summer break.
Wayne Williams was on fire early in the season, his 20 Stableford points, including not scoring on the long par 4, 6th, was just enough to hold off Mike Austin on 19 points.
The organiser King Richard had all the golfers playing off new adjusted 9-hole handicaps.
It will be interesting to see how these hold up over the next few months.
It is pleasing to report that the course has received much-needed rain, with up to 40mm falling in the last week, showing good grass growth on all fairways.
Mowing and general maintenance, including removal of fallen branches and stumps, will commence over the next few weeks, in preparation for the official golf season starting late March or early April.
Reminder: Wednesday social 9-hole golf has started with assembly at 8.30am for a hit off at 9 am.
