Echuca Moama Cycling Club (EMCC) saw four of its young guns head to Bright last weekend to compete in the first Victorian Junior Racing Series (VJRS) race for 2022.
George Griffiths, Lenny Griffiths, Max Trewhella and Levi Hone each competed in three stages over two days at the Alpe De Buffalo Junior Tour and the Victorian Hillclimb Championships.

The individual time trial, criterium and road race awaited the EMCC talents, with Lenny Griffiths, Trewhella and Hone also tackling a gruelling 42km climb up Mt Buffalo.
Fifteen-year-old Hone, competing in the under-17 A group, finished third in the time trial, fifth in the criterium and fourth in the Mt Buffalo Hillclimb road race, which saw him secure second in the overall general classification.
Trewhella’s opening race marked his step up to the under-17 A group following a strong 2021 season in under-17 B.
Trewhella, 15, finished ninth in the time trial, seventh in the criterium and 11th in the Mt Buffalo Hillclimb road race, finishing eight in the general classification.
Lenny Griffiths, 14, competed in the under-17 B group, placing second in his time trial and third in the criterium, before nabbing third in the 42km road race.
These three individual podium places saw Griffiths finish third in the general classification.
Thirteen-year-old George Griffiths competed in the under-15 B group, where he was classified as a bottom-age competitor.
He took out the stage one time trial and placed second in the stage two criterium, sitting atop the general classification after day one of racing.
Day two saw him win the 24km road race to be named the outright winner of the general classification.
In unfamiliar conditions, the riders’ performances drew the praise of their home cycling club, with an EMCC statement expressing its congratulations.
It’s a particularly positive start for Hone, Trewhella and Lenny Griffiths, who also make up part of the RACE-VMG Accounting Cycling Team.
As part of the team, they work to develop their skills and abilities, providing a pathway to the National Road Series.
The next Victorian Junior Road Series race is in May, with the Ararat Junior Tour.
