This contest came down to the wire, with Tatura Tornados defeating Numurkah Penguins 76-75 in an incredibly close match.
Both sides were the benchmark of the regular season, with Tatura finishing undefeated on top and Numurkah in second.
In the semi-final, Tatura cruised to a 17-game victory, however, grand finals are always a different story.
Tatura Tornados captain Brad Wilson said it had been a good year for the side.
“It feels like it was a long time coming, we’ve had a few years where we’ve been the bridesmaids, so it was good to finally get across the line this year,” Wilson said.
“We hadn’t lost all year, so going into the finals, not having lost is a bit scary because you think there may be a loss coming at some point and hopefully it’s not at the grand final.
“It was damn close, so it was a big relief to get across the line.”
Wilson said the match came down to the last tiebreaker of the final set and with the rest of the rubbers finished, both teams gathered around to watch.
“Everyone was very happy when it came to an end,” he said.
“We all knew that it was riding on this game and were all standing up by that time.
“It was tense, but it exploded when we got that last point and everyone ran on the court, so we were pretty happy.”
He made special mention of Hannah Newman, with the youngster taking out the GM3 MVP and being the only person to play every round for the Tornados in her first year, along with Tony Gagliardi who took out the men’s MVP.
“The whole team all pitched in,” he said.
“You think about tennis as being an individual sport and it is for those professionals, but in our league it really is a team sport.”
