Echuca Moama Green has taken a big step towards securing the minor premiership in the Goulburn Valley Hockey Association.
A battle of the top two ensued in round eight, as the leading River Rats took on second-placed SYC at Shepparton Regional Hockey Complex.
Echuca-Moama stated its case for a title in the match with a dominant 6-0 thrashing of its closest rival.
Courtney Thompson did the majority of the damage, slotting five of the six scores to improve her season total to an impressive 18 from six appearances, while Meaghan Whan made the other River Rats breakthrough.
SYC still holds a game in hand when Echuca-Moama has its bye on July 26.
The River Rats Women’s White side had the bye this week.
Men’s
The Echuca-Moama men’s side took on Strikers in a Regional Hockey League clash.
While the game still counted towards the GVHA standings, it also factored into the RHL, a combined competition with Hockey Central Vic.
Things didn’t go the River Rats’ way in the encounter, Strikers cruising home 8-0 through goals from Xavier McBain (3), Angus Cole (2), Timothy Russell, Gurbaj Singh and Danny Ballinger.
In B-grade, Echuca-Moama took on SYC and also suffered defeat, 5-1.
Adrian Rose managed the River Rats’ lone score as SYC shared the goals around, five different players making breakthroughs for the host.
The GVHA is on break for the next two weeks, with games to resume the weekend of July 19-20.
