‘He was terrific:’ McCarthy’s big day out

If the Tongala stats trust is accurate, Coby McCarthy may have notched a feat rarely seen in local footy.

A “terrific” McCarthy booted eight goals, but also collected somewhere in the region of 60 disposals against Rumbalara at the weekend.

“He kicked eight (goals) from on-ball and upwards of 60 disposals, the boys tell me,” Blues’ coach Matt Daniel said.

“They were taking his stats; he had a day out.

“Dom Watt who wasn’t playing was keeping them on his phone, Jordan Souter had him for the first quarter and said he had 17 touches in that term.”

The O’Dwyer Medallist’s severe case of leather poisoning helped Tongala notch a 194-point win over Rumba, his first game since earning a suspension in round one against Echuca United.

The performance only highlighted his importance in the engine room according to Daniel, particularly in some tight defeats.

“He would have made a big difference against Nathalia (one-goal loss) and Cobram (13-point loss), that’s for sure,” he said.

Now in sixth place and with one of their prime movers back in action, the Blues will be hoping to climb even further up the standings with a clash against the winless Tocumwal this Saturday.
