Ishinryu students Liliana, Addison, Keaon and Victoria all made the journey down to Melbourne to show off their skills in the kata and fighting disciplines, with the quartet all recording strong results.
Arriving in Melbourne for their 9am weigh-in, Liliana, Addison and Keaon were first up in the seven-and-under male and female category to perform their kata in front of the judges, with the trio all earning top-10 finishes in the state.
Victoria was next to perform in the 8–9-year-old bracket, with the judges deeming her kata performance worthy of fourth place.
After such a strong showing, all four students have earned an invitation to compete in the national championships on December 3, which sensei Tamara Davies was thrilled with.
“It is such a big day for all the kids getting up so early, big drive and such a different atmosphere, but they all did an awesome job,” she said.
“My favourite thing to see is the change in their presence when they stand on the competition mat.
“They can go from playing with the other kids one minute to 100 per cent focus in the middle of the mat with over 100 people staring at them and they are just in their absolute element.”
While undoubtedly filled with joy given the achievements of her students, sensei Tamara stressed that no matter the result, she would be proud of her charges for simply giving it a go.
“I tell the kids every competition I’ll be right there, right next to the mat,” she said.
“The only thing that matters is when you walk off that mat, no matter how you perform, you look for me and give me the biggest smile so you can see me smiling back and know how proud of you I am.
“Without fail they look for me and we share a smile because that’s what it’s all about, not winning or losing but doing your best, and your best is worth celebrating every single time.”
Ishinryu Karate Echuca trains every Monday and Wednesday from 6pm to 7pm, with anyone over the age of four welcome to take part.
