The football and netball club is making the call out for anyone interested in playing football, with the hope of fielding either one or both new teams in a Bendigo-based competition.
Current senior women’s teams in the Central Victoria Football League include Bendigo, Eaglehawk, Golden Square, Kangaroo Flat, Kerang, Kyneton, North Bendigo and Strathfieldsaye.
Club president Andrew Cochrane said the idea was first brought up at a committee meeting mid-season.
“One of our netballers said there was a few girls who might be interested in getting a side together,” Cochrane said.
“And we have already got a few girls playing under-14s at the moment, so we thought we’d just put the feelers out there and see if we can rustle up enough numbers.
“Otherwise we will help them find a team to play for.”
If successful, Cochrane said it would be an exciting prospect for a small town to offer a women’s and Youth Girls football program.
“If we can get enough numbers, and get it up, it would be awfully good for our community,” he said.
“If these players go to another club, then all of a sudden they are not at yours, and they don’t always come back.’’
Players don’t need to be already affiliated with LBU to express interest.
