This is often due to a lack of new members coming along.
It is somewhat a tragedy when that organisation is a contributor to the community, and this is now the case for the Leitchville Bunyips Sporting Club.
The club needs an influx of new members to keep going.
The club was formed in 1961 by the workers from the Leitchville Kraft Factory.
There was also a sister club formed at the Port Melbourne Kraft factory, but unfortunately, that club is now no more.
While the club is named a sporting club, its main role is to engage members in friendship and go fishing.
The club has a major fishing competition each year in August, which is the COD Closing Competition, held in Koondrook.
The event has in the past attracted some 200 competitors from Victoria and NSW.
The club also has various fishing events during the year.
The first event is usually a local event in Cohuna in mid-January and there are also events at various locations in March and April.
We also have a ‘members only’ COD Opening event in December each year.
The club holds monthly meetings at the ‘Bunyip Hut’, which is the club’s headquarters.
The club has been very committed to community projects and organisations, making donations to local hospitals, aged care and school scholarships.
Also, from our cooking trailer, we have catered for men’s breakfasts and other community events.
If you or someone you know would like to become involved, check out the Leitchville Bunyips Facebook page for more details, email leitchvillebunyips@outlook.com or contact Neville Hird 0428 569 119 or Trevor Crane 0400 581 122.
Any interested parties should contact us and attend our next meeting on December 14.
