The Lions’ latest prey was last season’s wooden spooner and currently winless Nondies-Cohuna at Cohuna Recreation Reserve.
The host won the toss and elected to bat, which got off to a rocky start as captain and opener Josh Novoselek was bowled by Jeremy Felmingham for a duck five balls into the innings.
Matt Oddie departed shortly after for 10 when Kade Pearse sent down a bullet that beat him all ends up.
Zeb Ellwood batting at number three anchored the innings for the host, raising the bat for a hard-nosed half-century before he was stumped by Regis Chakabva off Prateer Mehta’s bowling.
There was not a lot of productivity through the middle order for Nondies as Broden Wishart, Jamal Sukhon and Xavier Wishart were gone cheaply.
Rhys Thrum (18), Kyeran Ellery (17) and Matthew Robinson (21) provided some resistance in the tail as Nondies were bowled out for 132 in 35 overs.
Mehta laid waste to Nondies, taking his maiden McMahon Shield five-wicket haul with figures of 5-52.
With a relatively small run chase, BLU took its time.
Kayden Blachford and Liam Hamilton got things rolling with 38 between them before the latter was gone for nine.
After a patient 40 off 70 from Blachford, he too was walking off the pitch after being caught behind by Broden Wishart off Callum Neil’s bowling.
BLU’s star batters Kade Pearse (14) and Chakabva (10) got starts, but couldn’t kick on as Woody Wilson (29 not out) and Luke Thompson (25 not out) steered their side home just shy of 34 overs and with six wickets in hand.
The victory keeps the Lions in a tier above the rest with Moama and will have a tough match in round six, facing off against rival Rochester at Bamawm Recreation Reserve.
Meanwhile, Nondies will have a tough time of it, going up against a red-hot Echuca South side at Echuca South Recreation Reserve on Saturday.
