Luca represented Deniliquin High School at the NSW All Schools Swimming Championships at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Thursday and Friday last week.
Luca swam in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke finals and swam personal best times in all events.
He placed fourth in both the 50m and 100m breaststroke, trimming half a second off his best swim times in each event.
In the 200m breaststroke he finished in fifth place, but shaved seven seconds of his previous personal best.
Luca’s father, Rohan Caniglia, said All Schools was a great experience.
“Luca was racing against some of the best kids of his age group in the national rankings, so it’s been an excellent achievement.”
Rohan said it was also good for Luca to get an understanding of the standards required at training for the next level of competition.
“This has been good for Luca, who is striving now to get the times he needs to win these competitions.
“He has already started a new training program and has plans in place to achieve his goals.”
Luca is also currently competing in the short course super series in Bendigo, which has four rounds of competition and sees the leading aggregate points scorer taking out the title for the age group.
“In the first round of competition, Luca managed to place first in all his races and achieve personal best times across all the events,” Rohan said.
Among his busy swimming schedule, Luca now also has his sights set and is working towards the Victorian age short course championships in August.
