Prior to the senior clash at Mathoura Recreation Reserve, Aboriginal Elder Uncle Rick Ronan will perform a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony from 1:30pm, while players will wear culturally inspired jumpers designed by Uncle Raymond Walker.
Organiser and player Keisha Egan said the club would love to see its past and present Indigenous representatives attend, saying the day offered an opportunity to pass on knowledge to the younger generation.
“This year is slightly different, we’re encouraging our past and present Indigenous players to come back to the club,” Egan said.
“We would love to acknowledge them for their efforts, and what they have contributed to the club in the past.
“We would like to get them back and for them to tell their story and hopefully be mentors to some of the younger generation that are stepping up into that space.”
The round has assumed a proud spot on the Mathoura fixture, and supporters will have an opportunity to obtain an Indigenous round jumper when they are auctioned off later in the day.
Mathoura will also hold its sponsors’ day as the Timbercutters and Blues go head-to-head on the field and netball courts.
Picola sits precariously in eighth spot on the senior football ladder, and will be seeking its sixth win against Mathoura, which has one win to its name this season.
Meanwhile, Mathoura sits two games adrift of the top eight and will be looking to keep its A-grade season alive, while fifth-placed Picola is looking to consolidate in the top eight.
Proceedings kick off from 1pm this Saturday, July 9 at Mathoura Recreation Reserve.
