Moama erases early deficit in Three Jacks

In a turn of events almost identical to the previous week, Francis Lias’ side made an excellent start, kicking the first six goals to shock its rivals in the first quarter.

Against Deniliquin the Eagles let go of the rope during the second term and the same would happen against Moama, the Magpies clawing their way back into the match before half-time.

Four majors to Echuca United’s one had Moama suddenly trailing the Eagles by nine points at the main break, 5.5 (35) to 7.2 (44).

In a well-contested third quarter, Echuca United hit the scoreboard first to extend its lead to 15, but this goal would be its last of the afternoon.

Moama took over midway through the third, with goals from Archie Teasdale and Zade Maschewski bringing the host to within a point at three-quarter time and setting the highly-anticipated fixture up for a thrilling finale.

With all the momentum on their side, Shannon Keam’s men picked up where they left off in the final term, kicking four majors and overturning the early deficit, as Echuca United only mustered five behinds in reply.

Overall, after conceding the first six goals, Moama booted 11 of the game’s next 13 to complete a 51-point turnaround, triumphing 11.12 (78) to 8.8 (56).

Moama won all of the other football grades on the day as well, being complemented by dominance in the netball, meaning it retained the Three Jacks Trophy for another year.

The Magpies now face last year’s minor premier Congupna on Saturday, April 11 from 2pm, the clash shaping up as an early showdown between finals contenders at Moama Recreation Reserve.

Meanwhile, Echuca United will be ruing a second straight defeat where it blew a considerable early advantage, but has some time to regroup with the bye this week.
