The senior football team crushed the Hoppers at Yarroweyah Recreation Reserve on Saturday, April 27, running up an astronomical score to win 33.20 (218) to 1.3 (9).
The Blues maintained pressure throughout the contest, adding at least six goals in every term while the host was only able to manage a single major in the second period.
Coach Rhys Woodland was happy with the way his side maintained its focus despite the result being settled early on in the contest.
“They played a team game the whole way through, a team approach instead of getting selfish,” he said.
“These sorts of games, you can get pretty hungry, and you can sort of lose track of the game pretty quick, but they stuck to the structures very well, and shared the ball around really well up forward.
“The mids didn’t crowd the forward line at all, they held their width, and we were able to sort of run through them pretty comfortably.
“(That) left an open forward line and they worked really well together as well and kept their space.
“These sorts of games can dirty up pretty quick and they can roll numbers back, but we were able to keep the game nice and open and in our favour.”
On a big scoring day, a swathe of Blues came away with big goal hauls.
Lachlan Collins led the way with six while Jason Beckett and Blake Azzopardi were close behind with five majors each.
Collins was one of the Blues’ best in Woodland’s opinion while there were a number of other standout efforts in a great team performance.
“Lachie Collins was good, he came back into the side this week after a bit of an injury so it was good to get him back up forward and setting us up,” Woodland said.
“Young Tommy Daniel played the under-17 game as well as the seniors and he played quite well and was pretty damaging up forward and Blake Jorgensen was pretty good through the middle as well, with plenty of centre clearances all day.”
Next Saturday, Picola United hosts Katamatite, the first of an important run of fixtures for the Blues, according to Woodland.
“A big four weeks that’ll really set up our year up,” he said.
“If we can get a few good wins on the board now, it’ll set us up because we’ve got a tough run home.
(Katamatite) have been a good side, they obviously toppled Waaia last week so we’ll be up for the fight.
“Looking forward to sinking our teeth into it, that’s for sure.”
