Despite a slow start Picola United managed to prevail against ninth-placed Berrigan in their round 11 clash in Picola District Football Netball League.

Coming off a bye the week before the Blues were slow to get moving in the first quarter with a few turnovers proving costly against the Saints who led by a goal at quarter-time.

Picola began warming up in the second term, kicking a pair and three behinds to Berrigan’s sole goal to lead by three at the half.

It was still a tight affair after half-time, with both teams bagging a pair of goals each, only the Blues’ four behinds separating the two sides heading into the fourth quarter.

The final frame is where Picola United really turned it on, completely shutting down Berrigan’s attack and piling on three goals and two behinds to secure a 15-point win, 9.11 (65) to 6.4 (40).

Picola United coach Rhys Woodland was happy that the Blues came away with the victory despite struggling to start, pointing to their week’s rest as the culprit.

“It was a pretty scrappy affair coming off the bye we were a bit slow to start, but after half-time we came out with more purpose and got on top of them,” he said.

“Sometimes you have to win ugly, which is what it was like yesterday, it was a bit of an arm wrestle, but it was good to come away with the four points.”

Woodland highlighted two key players who stood out in the clash against Berrigan and looked ahead to their upcoming skirmish against arch-rival Mathoura in round 12.

“Zac Cockayne was great in half-back, he intercepted everything and Cody Haub played another awesome game again kicking six, so he was really dangerous up front,” he said.

“It’s always good coming up against the old arch-rivals Mathoura, they are always a tough opponent and it’ll be a contested game, so we are looking forward to the challenge next week.”
