Rich River’s Anne Dodd, Dave Maher, Alan Holding, Russell Smyth and Helen Brierley were in the 12-player squad that travelled to Benalla on Friday, November 12, for the challenge.
Joining other players from across the Goulburn Valley, the team, known as the Purple Caps, competed against North Eastern Croquet Association in the second annual iteration of the event, shrugging off a slow start to come home strong and finish ahead in games and hoops.
Slippery conditions saw players battling the elements and each other, though overall spirits were high.
The Purple Caps found themselves behind the eight-ball early, down in all three divisions for a total of seven games to 11, and 93 hoops to 111.
But the second half was a different story, with all of GVCA’s divisions finishing ahead on games and hoops, 13-116 to 5-94.
In the end it was an exciting finish, with GVCA winning 20-209 to 16-205.
Playing in the division one side was Smyth, while Maher and Dodd were teammates in division two.
Holding and Brierley made up half of the division three team.
