Both the men’s and women’s sides suffered defeat in their respective leagues at the weekend.
The men’s side took on Golden City at Shadforth Park in Bendigo, and was well in the game until the dying minutes, falling 4-2.
The Border Raiders opened the scoring almost immediately, Dillon Cahill finding the back of the net within three minutes.
The score remained 1-0 for more than half-an-hour, until a glut of goals before half-time turned the game on its head.
Win Boe was first to strike for Golden City, and a minute later the host had two after Pare Men slotted his first.
Daniel Rizani found an equaliser for the Border Raiders shortly after, but the Golden City pressure would force an Echuca-Moama own goal before the break, the Rams heading into the sheds up 3-2.
After a chaotic 10 minutes before the break, the teams had a chance to settle at half-time, and the more measured play of the first half-hour resumed in the second half.
The Border Raiders became increasingly desperate to notch the equaliser as the half wore on but it was Golden City who made the breakthrough as Men scored his second to lock up the game five minutes from time.
Echuca-Moama has three games remaining in their season, next visiting Swan Hill for a match at Ken Harrison Reserve on Saturday.
Women’s
While the men were close to scoring the upset, the women’s side had a trickier task against a clinical Strathfieldsaye attack at Strathfieldsaye Recreation Reserve, dominated 11-1.
The Border Raiders proved resilient over the opening half-hour, a lone Maddison Risdale strike the only thing separating the sides at the 30-minute mark.
The cracks began to show over the final 15 minutes of the half, as Jessica Dover found two of her four for the afternoon, and Rebecca Berry also opened her account to make the lead four at half-time.
Paige Pinson pulled one back for the Border Raiders in the second half, but the floodgates truly opened late in the game as Strathfieldsaye piled on four in the last 10 minutes on its way to the big win.
The relegation battle is still on for Echuca-Moama with three fixtures remaining. The Border Raiders will be desperate for the points that could seal their safety.
The side has two matches ahead in the coming week against the league’s top two, first hosting Shepparton United at Jack Eddy Oval on Sunday, before following up on Tuesday night with a catch-up fixture against Spring Gully.
