Echuca United fought hard against top two Murray Netball League side Nathalia, but a slow start put the Eagles on the back foot.
Although a final scoreline of 56-39 looks like a comfortable victory for the Purples, the host at Nathalia Recreation Reserve was only marginally ahead for three of the four quarters.
The Eagles were put on the back foot early as Nathalia’s clinical ball movement and accurate shooting yielded 16 goals in the first period, while the visitors managed 8.
From there, Echuca United fought hard to create a much closer contest and not let the margin escalate out of control.
The Purples won the remaining periods by 3, 2 and 4 goals respectively.
The Eagles (6-1-10) can lock up eighth spot this weekend in the final round, but their upcoming encounter with Deniliquin also has huge finals implications.
If the Rams pick up the win they will pass the loser of Moama and Numurkah to claim the last finals spot.
However, if Echuca United can play spoiler then the Magpies and the Blues will qualify for the post-season and Deniliquin will be eliminated.
The two sides will clash at Echuca South Recreation Reserve on Saturday.
