Vic Country girls’ training camp features local flavour

Girls representing the Goulburn and Murray Valley regions have earned the call-up to Vic Country’s pre-season training squad in December and January.

In an announcement Thursday afternoon, Shepparton Swans junior Holly Egan and Moama’s Alexis Gregor will receive the early opportunity to showcase their skills before recruiting panels make appointments early next year.

Much like the boys’ camps for Vic Country and Metro ― which were locked in last week ― the Country girls will undertake their first weekend in the hub on December 18-19 at The Hangar in Essendon.

The girls will fly solo for the program’s second half, though, spending January 23-25 at Federation University Ballarat after the boys end their camp there.

The Vic Country girls program will again be overseen in 2024 by inaugural Geelong AFLW captain and former Demon Mel Hickey.

Swans standout Egan suited up for the Murray Bushrangers 11 times in 2023, averaging 15.4 touches and 3.8 tackles a game as a bottom-ager.

She also became familiar with the Vic Country set-up after earning a nomination for a mid-season trial game.

Meanwhile, key defensive prospect Gregor missed the entire Coates Talent League campaign last season for Bendigo, but her potential has been recognised nonetheless with a berth in the hub.

Gregor featured in 12 Pioneers game across various levels in an interrupted 2021 season and 2022.

Another Murray Bushranger got the nod as well, with Murray Felines defender Madison Ibrahim receiving an invitation after 13 Coates Talent League appearances in 2023.
