The new season brings with it some changes to the landscape of the competition, with the team pool shrinking from 11 to seven.
Last season’s champions Mooroopna Cats along with Nagambie, Shepparton Youth Club United and Kyabram Redbacks have all departed the competition to start their Cricket Shepparton Women’s competition.
That leaves seven sides to duke it out for the flag in 2025-26, and the competition will be wide open with both of last season’s grand finalists gone.
Echuca is the only remaining side that made the finals last season and, as such, will be considered the heavy favourite to claim the chocolates on the first day of March.
The green machine’s first order of business will be to get a win over Breretons Bakery NACC at Nathalia Showgrounds in round one.
Breretons Bakery finished in the middle of the pack last season with a record of 4-8 and will look to climb the standings in a smaller competition.
Moama was stiff not to play finals last season, finishing in fifth with the same number of points as fouth-placed Shepparton Youth Club United, with percentage splitting the difference.
Ariel Howe and Moama will look to climb the GMCW ranks this season.
Rochester was in the same boat, settling for sixth despite the same number of wins.
The two sides will be Echuca’s biggest threats to winning it all this season, with Moama travelling to Cooma Recreation Reserve in round one and Rochester hosting Katty Tigers at Windrige Oval.
For a small town of less than 100 residents, Cooma consistently bats above its average in cricket, with its women’s side being no exception.
Finishing in eighth last season with a record of 4-8, the little team that could may very well find itself playing finals this summer.
Katty Tigers were right behind Cooma last season in ninth with a record of 3-9 and will look to get on the front foot immediately.
Bamawm-Lockington United has the bye in round one and will be happy to get an extra weekend of training under its belt after finishing as the winless wooden-spooners last season.
The first four rounds of the GMCW competition will be played in the T20 format before switching to one-day from round five through to the grand final.
All round one matches are slated for a 10am start.
