Britain's deputy prime minister will refer herself to the ministerial standards watchdog after admitting she had underpaid the amount of tax on a property she purchased in southern England.

Angela Rayner, who is also Britain's housing minister, has been under scrutiny for days over her purchase of a flat in Hove near the southern English seaside resort of Brighton, and whether she deliberately avoided paying the correct rate of tax.
In an interview with Sky News, Rayner said she had considered resigning over the issue and has now contacted Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs to say that there is additional property tax to be paid on the property.
"I'm devastated because I've always upheld the rules and always have done," she said on Wednesday, adding she would refer herself to the ministerial standards watchdog.
"I made a mistake based upon the advice that I relied upon that I received at the time."
