The much needed boost for the Central Murray Regional Public Library is expected to reach $79,707 in 2023.
The new model for the subsidy adjustment has been developed to ensure all New South Wales councils receive an equitable share of the increased funding through the Public Library Funding Strategy for 2019/20.
Edward River Council Mayor Norm Brennan said the increase in funding is ‘‘fabulous news’’ for the Edward River community.
‘‘It will allow us to provide better collections and some new programs, events and activities that support early and lifelong learning, digital inclusion, local heritage and arts and culture,’’ he said.
‘‘We will be looking at more contemporary ways to communicate all the wonderful resources the library has to offer our residents.
‘‘We also want to develop our online presence through an updated website, and by expanding digital services and resources; and continue to explore technologies that support social connectedness.
‘‘Public libraries have gone from being passive providers of information to places of active learning and connection.
‘‘It is where the community can turn information into knowledge and where people can meet, explore and create at a great library.’’
The new funding model comes almost 12 months after Edward River Council joined a NSW Public Libraries Association and Local Government NSW campaign to call for the state’s contribution to libraries to be doubled.
